The Iron Curtain Trail  is a 6,800 km long 'green ribbon' from the Arctic to the Black Sea. It commemorates the guarded fence that divided Europe for several decades - and the way that separation was overcome. And it consists of cycleable and walkable roads.

The trail was designed by Michael Cramer, a member of the European Parliament for the German Greens, for whom 'the Trail will help to promote a European identity'. Cramer, who persuaded the Parliament in 2005 to adopt it as part of its sustainable tourism directive, also designed the 'Berlin Wall Trail', which addresses the construction and fall of the Berlin Wall.
