European Democracy

Towards a Europe(an Party) of People

As long as you cannot vote for the European Parliament, a European debate is the sum of national debates, and citizens from the member states don’t share a political and cultural space, Europe remains a tool for politicians and institutions. Making it ours is the Networks’ core theme. In 2011 our main theme is

o – European lists!

Obliging member states to let people elect at least part of the European Parliament through pan-European lists can be a very strong way to make them think European, and have been proposed outside (European Federalists) and inside the European Parliament for over 25 years. Right now, the European Parliament discusses a proposal in this sense, for which support from the member states is needed. So it is time to mobilise support. Read Inti’s blog to get inspired. o -What Future for the EGP?

Since early 2010 the European Greens are discussing how to make their structure Fit for the Future. The results of this process – to which the Network has contributed – will be discussed during the Budapest council from 31/03 to 03/04, and lead to a statues change in Autumn. We’ll be involved – and report on this site.

The debate about the underlying division of roles between the EGP, the Green Group in the European Parliament however, has only just started.  After a

  • brainstorm in Berlin in May we
  • publish one or more position papers.
  • If you’t like to write one too, don’t hesitate to contact coordinator Christoph Becker-Schaum.
