Parties & EGP Supportership
A Survey
In principle tall 40-odd European Green parties should offer their membeers the possibility to register as EGP supporters, if they would take the statutes‘ and standing orders‘ changes they adopted in 2004 seriously. Unfortunately that is not the case.
Four parties have opened registration
- GroenLinks (Netherlands) has an online registration form. Non-members are welcome too
- Bündnis 90/Die Grünen has a downloadable form you have to return through the post. Non-members may register but pay much more
- The Green Party of England and Wales : awaiting online registration, Michael Stimson, m.stimson1@ntlworld.com handles registration
- Écolo (Walloon) : contact the party office
Three parties are about to introduce registration
- Miljøpartiet De Grønne (Norway) : as soon as the online registration facility is operational
- Déi Gréng: opened registration in 2008; members even automatically were EGP supporters unless they explicitly opted out. But because the decision wasn’t a personal one, few members understood what it was about, after which the supportership option was withdrawn. Reintroduction on a voluntary basis is expected by November
- Groen! : introduction is expected during the Summer weekend in August 2010
Two parties are positive,
but internal problems still prevent further steps
- Los Verdes (Spain) : after years of division and ego battles, a growing grassroots’ movement pushes for national unity. It considers the Supporters’ Network as its European point of reference.
- Federatione dei Verdi (Italy) : a dramatic election loss has put an end to all external ambitions. Awaiting better times, some would like the EGP supportership to become a European stepping stone for ‘homeless’ grassroots Greens
Two parties have formally agreed
but never started registration
- Comhaontas Glas/ The Irish Green Party : because European participation might sap precious members’ energy
- Les Verts (France): a few mmbers of the European commission still block the last step because ‘EGP supportership should be imcompatible with the party’s federal structure’, but the impending merger with the new movement Europe Ecology may bring a breakthrough
