Launched: an Eastern Europe network of Greens

by Yoav Shemer Kunz (Strasbourg)

Paris -During the ’Kick-off’ meeting of their 4th congress in Paris, the European Green Party yesterday launched a network of Greens in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. According to official delegates from Russia, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia and Bulgaria, the two main problems in these countries are: not enough democracy and too much poverty. Green leaders from Eastern Europe and the Balkans states agreed that, for capacity building of green parties of the region, such a network might be useful.

A few years after their entry to the European Union, countries like Hungary or Romania suffer from social problems, which are not a good soil to Green politics. The participants agreed that the problems these parties are facing are not the same as in Western Europe, and that the East-West dialogue and mutual exchange of information should be strengthened.

The 4th European Green party congress takes place this weekend in Paris. Eva Joly, the Greens’ candidate for the Presidential elections in France this spring will speak in front of over a thousand participants this afternoon in the congress’ main hall.
