Greenroots Strategies for a Citizens’ Europe

Supporters’ Fringe meeting EGP congress Paris, 12 November

Greens have many reasons to encourage a stronger, more democratic and equal Europe: prevent the world to be dominated by marketplaces and undemocratic empires; ensure that citizens who largely share the same fate and values, share the political decisions concerning their future; increase their say in the European structures in which so much is decided.

Greens have one reason to act now:  whereas the current crises call for a strong, united and accountable European governance, the support for it in the member states is declining. Initiatives to restore the balance cannot come from political leaders alone; action at the grassroots level is needed as well.

In this fringe meeting we will, starting from the experience of the EGP Supporters’ Network and the French Green federalist network Fédécolos, explore how we can put together energies at the base of the Green movement in various countries and turn them into effective action. We will design a strategy, ranging from long-term perspectives to actions and campaigns on the shorter term – think of the European Citizens’ Initiative or pan-European election lists, to seize the opportunities the current crises offer to bring our Europe of Citizens nearby.
