Czech Greens: out again

A disappointing 2,44% in last week’s elections left the Czech Greens without a seat in the national Parliament. The party had been part of Government since 2007, but failed the threshold of 5 %.

The Green star had risen fast after it obtained support from former president Václav Havel and was joined by the popular politician Martin Bursík, a former Christian democrat. That resulted in 6,3% in the 2007 elections, a debut in Parliament and 4 seats in the cabinet of Prime Minister Topolánek. But after internal problems in 2008/9 Strána Zelených suffered a backlash from which it hasn’t yet recovered.

In autumn the party will probably organize a conference to figure out how to turn the tide.
