12 May: What Rules for the EU Citizen’s Initiative?

The Citizen’s Intiative allowing each EUropean to put his concerns on the EU agenda is about to become reality, so it is time to establish the rules. The German Green MEP Gerald Häfner invites all to a public hearing in the European Parliament. Judging by his questions, the outcome may be very critical towards the proposal of the European Commission, which:

• sets the threshold at 1/3 of the member states and a meticulously defined minimum of signatures per state

• asks for sensible data like passport or social security numbers and leaves verification to the member states

• adds an admissibility check that excludes issues that are abusive or against the values of the Union,  amend EU treaties or deal with issues only the Council of member states is allowed to address.

The European Citizens’ Initiative - Toothless Tiger – Or an Open Door for the People? Brussels, European Parliament, Rue Wiertz Room  ASP1 G3. 12 May 14.30-18H.

Registration until 10 May 12h.
