Let the European people decide

In a petition the European federalists and the Young federalists ask for a European wide referendum on the EU-Constitution on the same day as the elections for the EP in 2009. National referendums, they say, sometimes focus on distracting national issues rather on the European issue that is actually to be decided., whereas a European referendum will be about the constitution itself. And the decision to be taken is not about individual European countries but about the future of Europe as a whole and therefore should be taken by the people of Europe together.
