Nairobi hosts Global Greens

Brussels – From 24-27 January 2008, Nairobi will host the 2nd Congress of the Global Greens. The congress, strengthening the green movement in developing countries, is the final event of a year that starts with the 2nd Global Young Greens meeting in the location, a warming up for the World Social Forum that starts in the Kenyan capital only a few days later.  The Global Green Congress will be co-hosted by nobelist Wangari Maathai and the Mazingira Green Party, the strongest African green party by far. During the next months, the organisers will focus on fund raising to enable young people and green politicians from poor countries to participate. Themes will be determined later on.The Global Greens were founded in 2001, during a cngress in Canberra in which 72 parties from five continents participated. The most well known result was the Global Green Charter, starting with

United in our awareness that we depend on the Earth’s vitality, diversity and beauty, and that it is our responsibility to pass them on, undiminished or even improved, to the next generation’

and ending with

‘We will supports each other personally and politically with friendship, optimism and good humour, and not forget to enjoy ourselves in the process!’

The Global Young Greens conference will bring together, in a social forum style, the next generation of social change actors. Participants lead the workshops, ideas will be called for later this year. But one theme surely will be on the programme: What kind of organisation can we form? The answer, containing the number of congresses, seminars and trainings to be held, will also depend on the available financial means. Participants will be offered the opportunity to stay in Nairobi and attend the World Social Forum, covering accommodation costs until the 25th of January, when the World Social Forum ends. For more info: gyg_confpt@listi.jpberlin.de.
